Hunters should evaluate overall proportions rather than estimated weight alone because distance and terrain can make an animal appear larger or smaller than it actually is.
Tail, rump, and ear characteristics are especially useful because they can identify both sexes. White-tailed deer expose a conspicuous white underside when the tail is raised. Can You Identify a Deer Species by Its Antlers?
Antlers can help identify a deer species, but antlers alone are not reliable enough to confirm every deer identification.
