I am not the biggest fan when it comes to cleaning guns, but I have to do it to make sure they function well in case I need to use them. This is very important and something many people tend to overlook and then end up regretting it.

So, if you are cleaning your gun out of necessity like me or if you like cleaning because of the thrill you get, below are some tips that will go a long way in helping a gun owner clean their guns and allow them enjoy their sport to the maximum.

There is nothing worse than bending some part because you are trying to force something when it should be coming apart easily. The best place to store your manual is the case you can easily get to if you need to see something. Another option is going online and searching for a manual similar to yours if you don’t know where yours is or is lost.

2. You should not have any ammunition in the room that you are cleaning your gun in.

If you store your ammo in the same space that you use to clean the gun, then you should consider getting a new gun cleaning location. There is always another newspaper every month about someone accidentally shooting themselves when cleaning their firearm because they thought the gun was unloaded.

3. Using the right cleaning products.

Some fumes will come from the cleaners, and the last thing you want is locked in a room full of these fumes. You can choose to do gun cleaning with the window open or in your garage, or even a back deck. Any place that doesn’t have ammunition is going to work well in this instance.

5. There are other items you are going to need when cleaning your gun. 

You will need pipe cleaners or Q-tips to reach places that are hard to reach, a rag or towel for wiping the gun off once you are done cleaning, the rod, patches to run down and brushes to clean the barrel. I like cleaning my gun after 500 rounds. If the firearm is from a quality company, then 500 rounds is a good frequency for cleaning it. When cleaning your gun, you should not be on a rush. If you have a handgun, then you can expect the cleaning to take no more than 30 minutes, but it should be time well-spent. Cleaning every crevice and nook of the firearm. You should always make sure you take good care of your gun because it might end up saving your life one day.

7. Remember magazines. 

When cleaning the gun, you should ensure you have also cleaned the magazines you have used for the last 500 rounds. If you have a pistol, then it should be easy to clean because pistol magazines can quickly disassemble.
