A very popular game that's been around forever. To play cornhole, you're going to need some bean bags and a wooden sheet with a hole in the middle. If you don't feel like being crafty, there are reasonably priced options on amazon - You can check them out here.
The objective of the game is very simple. Players stand back from the board, similar to darts. Then take turns aiming to get their bean bags through the hole from a distance. It's a simple premise but can offer hours of competitive fun for all ages.
2. Bocce ball
Next up is a fun game from the same family as lawn boules. Bocce ball follows the same premise as boules, however has some slight differences - one being that the balls have no inbuilt bias or weights. Meaning players don't have to compensate for the ball's movement. Also, the game is played on a much smaller scale with pitches being roughly five meters long.
Then there is also the crucial difference that players can throw their balls in the air. This being through an underarm motion. This game can offer hours of fun. Plus, it can be a very tactical and exciting game when mastered by the participants. If you want to find a set to play next time you're camping, pick one on Amazon; there are plenty of options.
3. Water Fights
On days where the sun is splitting the heavens and all you want to do is cool off. There is hardly a better or more fun way than to have a water fight. This can be through different mediums thanks to the different apparatus for soaking our targets nowadays. There’s water balloons, super soakers, Nerf guns, crossbows, and slingshots. All with the capacity to help you win your water-based battles.
This water fight can be an organized set of teams hunting each other down. Or alternatively, it can be made free for all with no allegiances. Either way, it’s a lot of fun and helps you beat the heat on a hot day.
4. Card Games
Sadly, not every day can be a scorcher, and there will be days where it rains and pours, although there is fun to be had in rainy outdoor pursuits. Many of us enjoy listening to the pitter-patter against our tents. So what better games to play when sitting in comfort than some fun card games.
Depending on how many players you have, there are a multitude of options. You could play solitaire if you're alone. Perhaps Go Fish or Jack Change It if you're with one buddy. Or if you've got a larger group, why not play some poker and bet pennies. Or perhaps something more precious like your secret candy stash. Whatever you choose, this is an excellent way to spend a rainy day or to kill some time until the sun reappears.
5. Scavenger Hunts
When the rain finally subsides. A great game for family and friends when camping is a good old fashioned scavenger hunt. This is when a group is given a set of items to find. These can be naturally occurring items such as 'something red', for example. Or it can be purposefully hidden items by the game coordinator.
It usually makes the game more interesting to have teams race against each other to find the most items. Plus, if the clues for said items are cryptic and puzzling, then all the better. This admittedly does require some planning. However, if done correctly, this can be an action-packed day of fun. If you need some inspiration, check out the picture below.
This is another game that's great for rainy days. Though it can be just as fun around a campfire. The aim of this game is to act out something without saying a word. A simple premise, but harder than it sounds. This may be a book, movie, action, feeling, or anything at all, really. As you can imagine, this can lead to hilarious results and great competition between opposing teams.
All you really require is a bunch of things to act out written on scraps of paper. Then something to place these in for players to pick at random. So this one is great if you find yourself out in the wild empty-handed.
7. Frisbee Golf
This one requires a Frisbee, a few laundry baskets, or similar containers. Plus, a good deal of open space to play in. The more varied the terrain, the better.
The aim of this game is to start from a good distance away from the baskets. Then akin to that of golf, players will aim to get Frisbees into the basket in as little throws as possible. This can be a very active game, especially playing in areas with hills and ledges that players must traverse. Plus, it offers a great competitive aspect too.
8. Sports Day/ Camp Olympics
Then lastly, we have an event that can last a day or spaced over the whole camping trip. This is not unlike a school sports day that I'm sure everyone will have some experience of. All participants will play a series of games to gain points or prizes. Perhaps even medals and trophies, depending on how serious it's taken on your camping trip.
This might consist of running, cycling, or swimming races. Perhaps soccer, football, volleyball, or badminton games. Or if sports aren't necessarily your group's thing. There's always the option of less active competitions like quizzes, puzzles or board games. This again will require some organization and perhaps a referee to make sure everyone plays fair. Though if everyone participates fully, it can be a truly phenomenal experience.
